The Origin of Coinmint
Current position: Home Page > Our History > The Origin of CoinmintFrom Abandoned Factory to Global Mining Hub
Trace the journey of how Coinmint transformed an abandoned industrial site in upstate New York into a pioneering blockchain infrastructure hub powered by clean energy.
The Birth of a Vision
Despite Bitcoin price fluctuations in 2015, Coinmint committed $700 million to the project, believing in the long-term value of blockchain technology.
Infrastructure Development
The transformation began, facing the challenge of converting old industrial facilities into a high-tech computing center:
- Upgraded power systems to support 435 MW of computing capacity
- Designed efficient cooling systems leveraging the region's cold climate
- Installed infrastructure for the first 100,000 ASIC miners
The engineering team innovatively utilized the factory's structure to maximize miner deployment while maintaining energy efficiency.
Clean Energy Strategy
Coinmint signed a long-term agreement with NYPA, securing 95% hydropower for its operations, establishing a clean energy mining strategy:
- 20-year hydropower purchase agreement for sustainable energy supply
- Intelligent energy management system to optimize hash rate-to-energy ratio
- One of the first large-scale mines to adopt 100% renewable energy
This strategic choice established Coinmint as an industry leader in environmentally responsible mining.
Launch of a Global Mining Hub
Coinmint announced the completion of its 435 MW mining center, becoming the world's largest Bitcoin mining facility at the time:
- First 50,000 miners deployed, achieving 1.2 EH/s hashing power
- Created 150 local jobs, stimulating regional economic growth
- Established industry-standard processes for miner operation and management
The Massena facility marked Coinmint's transformation from startup to a key player in blockchain infrastructure.
From Mining to Ecosystem
Building on the success of the Massena facility, Coinmint expanded its ecosystem:
- 2019: Launched cloud mining services to democratize access
- 2021: Completed $50M funding round to scale operations
- 2023: Launched trading platform, creating a "mining+trading" ecosystem
From an abandoned factory to a comprehensive ecosystem, Coinmint's journey reflects the evolution of blockchain infrastructure from niche to mainstream.
